I have for sale an absolutely stunning rare 1959 Rolex Precision Super Balance, fitted with the 1530 automatic movement, in a 9ct yellow gold Shackman case.
David Shackman & Sons (DS&S) manufactured high-quality watch cases for Rolex, particularly during the 1950s, 1960s, and into the early 1970s. Based in London, Shackman was one of the primary British casemakers contracted to house Swiss Rolex movements for the UK market, often using 9ct and 14ct gold. The case also has the London assay office hallmark, along with the date for the year 1959. This would make a great “birth year” piece to any enthusiast or collector.
The Rolex 1530 is a calibre by Rolex., which is a Self-winding movement, bi-directional winding, 18,000 A/h, 25 jewels. The 1530 movement was also used in earlier versions of the Submariner.
The watch is currently working perfectly and keeping time as you’d expect. The case, acrylic and hands are all in great condition. There is a light patina and some marking on the outer edges between the 10 and 2 position. I had considered getting the dial restored, however my personal preference has always been to leave watches like this in their original condition. Just like us, each watch has a story to tell and the scars to prove it. It’s also very difficult to undo any changes or “restoration”, so will leave this to the new owner to decide. I have also fitted a tan leather Hirsch strap, which I think suits the watch well.
