STAN MATILPI (1936-2005) ESTATE SALE FIND: Hand carved RAVEN RED CEDAR PLAQUE, BY Kwakiutl Artist Stan Matilpi. IT MEASURES approximately 11 1/2" X 8". The Kwakwaka'wakw (formerly known as the Kwakiutl) are an Indigenous group of First Nations, numbering about 5,500, who live in British Columbia on northern Vancouver Island and the the adjoining mainland and islands. Stan Matilpi was born at Alert Bay on Vancouver Island in 1936. He began carving in the late 1960's & trained under the guidance of his brother Oscar Matilpi. Stan Matilpi died in 2005 THE CARVING IS IN GREAT CONDITION. Please refer to the photos.
