Four monochrome
photographs attached to card, signed Paul Joyce and dated 1974. Each number ‘34’
in pencil verso. Attributed to Paul Joyce (b.1944)
Paul Joyce is a
British photographer, filmmaker, and writer known for his work documenting
landscapes, architecture, and industrial environments. He has often focused on
how human activity shapes the natural world, particularly in Britain and parts
of Europe. Joyce studied at the Royal College of Art, where he later also
taught. His photography is often associated with the New Topographics
style—characterized by a neutral, objective view of man-altered landscapes.
Paul Joyce took
many of his photographs in Wales mainly during the 1970s and 1980s. These photographs
signed and dated 1974, are very likely Welsh landscapes and interiors
The photographs come
from a number of pieces of ephemera once belonging to Bill Butler (1934-1977);
poet, publisher, distributor and founder of the Unicorn Bookshop. I will be
listing the other items individually under the Category ‘Bill Butler Collection’.
