Raffinato dipinto fiammingo della prima metà del XIX secolo. Opera ad olio su tela raffigurante Salomè con la testa di San Giovanni Battista. Derivato da una celebre invenzione di Matthias Stomer (1600-1650), maestro del caravaggismo nordico, la composizione riprende con notevole fedeltà l'originale oggi esposto alla National Gallery di Londra, da cui eredita la forza scenica e il potente contrasto tra luce e ombra.

La madre di Salomè aveva abbandonato il marito per vivere con il cognato, il Re Erode. Giovanni Battista condannò pubblicamente l'accaduto e venne per questo imprigionato. Per compiacere la bella Salomè, Erode fece poi decapitare il Santo. L'opera raffigura il momento culminante dell'episodio evangelico in cui la principessa riceve la testa del Battista su un piatto: il carnefice lo solleva per i capelli, mentre una giovane figura in primo piano regge la luce che investe drammaticamente i volti dei presenti.

Quadro di grande effetto decorativo, ideale per ambienti di gusto classico, studi professionali o dimore storiche. Cornice moderna antichizzata in legno laccato e dorato. A refined Flemish painting from the first half of the 19th century. Oil on canvas artwork depicting Salome with the head of Saint John the Baptist. Based on a famous invention by Matthias Stomer (1600-1650), a master of Northern Caravaggism, the composition faithfully reproduces the original now exhibited at the National Gallery in London, from which it inherits its dramatic power and powerful contrast between light and shadow.

Salome's mother had abandoned her husband to live with her brother-in-law, King Herod. John the Baptist publicly condemned the incident and was imprisoned. To please the beautiful Salome, Herod then had the saint beheaded. The artwork depicts the culminating moment of the Gospel episode in which the princess receives the head of John the Baptist on a platter: the executioner lifts him by the hair, while a young figure in the foreground holds the light that dramatically bathes the faces of those present.

Der Henker hebt es an den Haaren hoch, während eine junge Gestalt im Vordergrund das Licht hält, das die Gesichter der Anwesenden dramatisch umspielt.
