Buffalo Hide Scale

Here is a nice iron spring "C" balance, also known as a Mancur or buffalo hide scale, 11 1/4" long. It is cast iron and brass. It has a nice patina to it and not rust. Most of these scales were imported from Europe in the early 1800’s. They were small enough for a buffalo hunter to carry in a saddlebag. A favorite with hunters and trappers and anyone else needing a compact scale to weigh heavy loads. This hand forged iron scale has a crescent or half moon shaped brass dial reading from 10 to 150 Kg., and on the other side from 0 to 16. Note the twisted split pointer allowing both sides of the dial to be read. It is in good condition and consistent with age of the 1800’s.

Will be packaged with care.
