- Hiatt entered the '90s firing on all cylinders, keeping a watchful eye on his songcraft as well as his ever-so-slowly increasing commercial recognition. Not only did he refuse to cut artistic corners on STOLEN MOMENTS in his efforts to broaden his fan base, he actually deepened his roots-rock pool and managed to get on the radio (briefly) in the process! STOLEN MOMENTS showcases a gentler (and sober) Hiatt. Whereas his early work often revealed a jagged sardonic edge, by 1990 Hiatt had loosened up considerably without losing an ounce of pop hook or a sliver of emotion from his craggy throat.
- He hits the mark immediately with "Child of the Wild Blue Yonder," easily his most effervescent song to date. Moreover, he has the good sense to avoid personal recovery melodramatics. If anything, he pokes fun at his less-than-wild self ("These days the only bar I ever see has got lettuce and tomatoes"). The album is not merely a light walk in the sunshine though. "Thirty Years of Tears" and "The Rest of the Dream" are among the most affecting songs in his entire oeuvre, revealing a warmth and maturity that compliments his passionate bark.
Professional Reviews: Rolling Stone (7/12/90) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...sturdy songs and passionate vocals with an array of distinctive guitar sounds.."
Q (7/95, p.141) - 3 Stars - Good - "...Hiatt's songs are beautifully written glimpses of life, peppered with longing and spiced with the inevitable torrents of emotional posturing....makes for a comfortable soulfulness and a more than gratifying earful."
