Antique Peter Dollond Achromatic Compound Monocular Microscope

Circa 1850s – London

This is an authentic antique achromatic compound monocular microscope made by Peter Dollond, London, believed to have been manufactured in the 1850s.

A beautiful example of mid-19th century British optical craftsmanship.

The microscope is fully functional and in good working condition.

Details

Wooden Case (see photo #3)

The case is made of mahogany wood and shows classic antique character.


Eyepiece (see photo #5)

Lens diameter: 15 mm (0.59 in)
The eyepiece consists of a single top lens that screws directly into the top of the tube.


Focusing Mechanism (see photo #7)

Focusing is performed by turning the rack-and-pinion coarse adjustment knob, which moves the support arm holding the tube up and down.


Achromatic Objective Lens (see photo #8)

The objective lens is achromatic and includes a protective cap.

Additionally, two achromatic objective lenses are included (see photo #13).


Specimen Stage (see photo #9)

Rectangular stage: 50 × 60 mm (1.97 × 2.36 in)
The stage is spring-loaded and can be pressed downward.
Specimens are secured between the stage surface and the U-shaped stage clip (clamp).

The stage and spring assembly are mounted on what appears to be a zinc-alloy base.


Mirror Assembly (see photo #10)

One side is a concave mirror (inner diameter 48 mm / 1.89 in)
The other side is a plane mirror (inner diameter 55 mm / 2.17 in)


Base and Pillar (see photo #11)

Round base diameter: 110 mm (4.33 in)
Base thickness: 23 mm (0.91 in)
Pillar diameter: 25 mm (0.98 in)

The pillar is engraved with:

DOLLOND. LONDON.


Underside (see photo #12)

The bottom is covered with black velvet.
