A wonderful original pen and ink drawing from German Jugendstil artist Hans Unger (1872-1936). The drawing is titled "Die Vergnugten" (the merry or happy ones) and depicts a man and woman happily entangled on a beach.
The drawing is signed, titled and dated by the artist and measures 7 3/4 x 7 1/4 inches, the full sheet is 12 5/8 x 10 inches and it is drawn on fine wove drawing paper. It has a tear in the right margin, it has been taped and does not reach the image. The paper has mild age toning and some surface grime, otherwise in fine condition. Should be re-matted and should frame up beautifully.
Hans Unger (August 26, 1872 – August 13, 1936) was a German painter who was, during his lifetime, a highly respected Art Nouveau artist. His popularity did not survive the change in the cultural climate in Germany after World War I, however, and after his death he was soon forgotten. However, in the 1980s, interest in his work revived, and a grand retrospective exhibition in 1997 in the City Museum in Freital, Germany, duly restored his reputation as one of the masters of the Dresden art scene around 1910.
