Circa 1970s-1980s piece is in excellent overall condition.
Large Chinese hand-carved wood intarsia relief plaque depicting a traditional longevity sage seated and offering fruit to the trickster monkey, the Chinese symbol of cleverness, wit, curiosity and adaptability.
The image is constructed from multiple separately carved wood elements, assembled to create strong high-relief depth rather than being carved from a single block. Contrast is achieved through the use of different woods, not paint, with lighter woods forming the figure and darker woods used for the rat, rock base, and background.
The sage’s robe is decorated with repeated shòu (longevity) medallions, carved and burned into the surface. Facial features, beard, hands, and drapery show careful hand work and dimensional carving well above typical souvenir pieces.
Measures 23" x 23" at outermost ends.
