Iconography & SymbolismThe Virgin Mary Giatrissa the Healer Icon (Greek: Παναγία Γιάτρισσα, meaning “The Healing Mother of God”) is one of the most beloved wonderworking icons of the Theotokos in Greece. The original icon is enshrined in Loutraki, Corinth, and is renowned for miraculous healings of both body and soul. In the icon, the Theotokos is depicted holding the Christ Child, who raises His right hand in blessing while holding a scroll — symbol of divine wisdom and healing grace. Above her appear the Greek letters MP ΘΥ (Meter Theou), meaning “Mother of God,” and beside Christ are IC XC, the abbreviation of “Jesus Christ.” His halo bears the cross with Ω Ο Ν (Omega, Omicron, Nu) – “He Who Is,” testifying to His eternal divinity. The Giatrissa icon emphasizes the intercessory power of the Virgin Mary, who prays for the healing and comfort of all who suffer in body or spirit. Feast DayThe Panagia Giatrissa is commemorated on September 8, the Nativity of the Theotokos, and locally in Loutraki on the same date. Suitable Gift For:
