This auction is for the 8x10 black and white negative pictured above.

This is a second generation negative and appears to be a copy negative and not a duplicate negative.

Negatives generally fall into two categories: first‑generation and second‑generation.

First‑generation negatives are the originals. These were created directly in the camera at the moment of exposure, which is why they offer the highest sharpness, detail, and accuracy. Original negatives are the rarest and most valuable. The movie studios sometimes would mark the originals with code numbers or dates written in original India ink but not always.

Second‑generation negatives include both copy negatives and duplicate negatives:

A copy negative is made from the original negative. It preserves much of the image quality but is not quite as sharp or detailed as the true original.
A duplicate negative is made from a finished photographic print, so it typically shows the least clarity of the three types.

Most 8x10 negatives of Hollywood stars or movie scenes are second‑generation—either copy negatives or duplicate negatives—produced by the studios themselves to make publicity stills / promotional photos.

In each of my listings of these 8x10 negatives, I will specify if the negative is an original or second generation and give my opinion if it is a copy vs a duplicate negative, so you know exactly what you’re purchasing. Please not sometimes it is difficult to differentiate between a copy or duplicate negative.

This negative is probably from a movie studio as some of these items came from a collector who worked at United Artists movie studio for many years and she also collected items from other movie studios. I also have bought many items from newspaper and magazine archives so it can be from there.
