Original Victorian watercolor painting on very fancy embossed paper, probably executed for a scrapbook page. Wonderful depictions of a European peacock butterfly and a red admiral butterfly. Most likely Continental European in origin and dating to the 1870s. The paper has a beautifully detailed embossed design of rose vines with butterfly corners.
It measures 3 1/2 x 5 inches. The reverse shows glue and vestiges of backboard at the corners, the paper has typical age toning and there are minor edge abrasions, otherwise excellent condition and would look very fine with frame and mat. Genuinely a lovely example of the genre.
