The 1977 Powerhouse
Released in 1977, the Technics SA-5470 represents the sweet spot of the "Golden Era" of Japanese Hi-Fi. It improved upon its predecessors with a refined circuit layout and a cleaner aesthetic, but it kept the most important thing: the massive power supply.
With 65 watts per channel of pure analog power, this receiver doesn't just play music; it commands your speakers. It features the classic weighted flywheel tuning knob that spins with momentum—a tactile feeling you simply cannot get from modern equipment. While the wood cabinet on this unit has seen better days, the electronics are pure vintage gold, making this an ideal project for someone who can restore the wood or simply wants the sound without the museum price tag.
What the Photos Reveal
We have photographed this specific item to show:
- The Model Identity: Confirmed SA-5470 (The 1977 update to the 5460).
- The Faceplate: The brushed silver front, knobs, and switches are in excellent condition, with working illumination on the signal/tuning meters.
- The Flaws: We have included close-ups of the bottom corners of the wood cabinet, showing significant veneer chipping and particle board wear. Ideally suited for a rack where sides are hidden.
