Antique 1920s Hand Quilted Pinwheel Quilt 72x62 Folk Art Cotton Textile.
This is an authentic early-20th-century American quilt, entirely hand-pieced and hand-quilted, featuring a classic Pinwheel / Whirligig pattern arranged in a square-in-square setting. The rotating blocks create a strong sense of motion, with period reds, indigo-blues, purples, and black prints set against an aged cream ground that has mellowed beautifully with time.
The quilt is quilted throughout by hand in elongated oval and leaf motifs across the sashing, with cross-hatching within the pinwheel blocks. Stitching, batting, and fabric behavior are all consistent with domestic quilting from the 1915–1935 period. The backing is a single piece of plain woven cotton, not feed sack, further supporting an early date.
This quilt shows honest age and use. There is edge wear and binding loss along the perimeter, and one block exhibits notable fabric loss and threadbare areas, particularly in the black print pinwheel. Overall thinning is consistent with age, but the quilt remains structurally intact and visually compelling. There are no modern repairs, no rot, and no odors detected.
This is not a reproduction or decorative revival piece. It is a lived-with household quilt that has survived intact for over a century. The wear tells its story and will appeal to collectors who value authenticity, period materials, and original handwork.
Approximate size: 72” x 62”.

This quilt was acquired from an estate in Alton, Illinois, a historic Mississippi River town with deep 19th–early 20th century domestic and textile traditions. While no maker attribution is present, the construction, materials, and wear patterns are fully consistent with a household-made quilt originating in the American Midwest during the early 20th century.
Estate provenance is noted for historical context only and is not presented as a guarantee of original ownership or maker identity.
