An unusual retained manuscript draft of a letter from poet Charles Olson while working as a member of the Democratic National Committee, presumably with regard to either his role director of the Foreign Nationalities Division or his organizational work for the DNC, and addressed to Democratic politican Robert E. Hannegan. 9.25" x 6" sheet, single handwritten page to reverse of period Hotel Wellington stationery. Undated, though the context of the letter likely places it in 1945. Signed by Olson at top.
The letter concerns the seating of Poland at an upcoming international conference in San Francisco, and the problems it is causing with voters across the northeast, particularly with regard to upcoming 1945 mayoral election in New York, as well as the national elections of 1946 and 1948.
Olson regularly inscribed books for friends and colleagues, though his letters are uncommon, and a retained draft such as this related to his earlier political career appears to be otherwise unknown in commerce.
