About Judas Iscariot
Judas is one of the twelve original apostles of Jesus Christ, best known for his role in the betrayal that led to Jesus arrest and crucifixion. He served as the treasurer for the group, managing the disciples communal funds during Jesus ministry.
According to the Gospels, Judas betrayed Jesus to the Roman authorities in exchange for thirty pieces of silver, identifying Jesus with a kiss in the Garden of Gethsemane. Overcome with remorse for his actions, Judas later took his own life by hanging, a moment often depicted in religious art and literature.
Throughout history, Judas has been a complex and controversial figure. While he is commonly remembered for his betrayal, some interpretations emphasize his role within Gods divine plan, suggesting that his actions, though tragic, were instrumental in fulfilling prophecy.
In Christian iconography, Judas is often represented with symbols such as a bag of silver, a rope, or a tree, highlighting both his betrayal and his tragic end. His story serves as a cautionary tale about temptation, guilt, and redemption, and it continues to inspire religious art, literature, and coinage like the Martyrdom of the Twelve Series.
