The Legend of Akh Tamar
Forbidden Love: An Armenian princess named Tamar lived in a castle on an island in Lake Van and fell in love with a commoner from the mainland. Marriage between royalty and commoners was forbidden in their society.
Secret Meetings: Each night, the young man would swim across the lake to the island, guided by a fire or torch that Tamar lit for him.
Tragedy: Tamar's father discovered their secret relationship. One night, he put out the guiding light, leaving the young man lost in the dark waters of the lake.
The Cry: After a long struggle with the waves, the exhausted commoner drowned. His final words, cried out into the night, were "Akh, Tamar!" ("Oh, Tamar!").
Legacy: Legend has it that the island was named Akhtamar because of his dying cries, which some say can still be heard near the island. The image depicts the princess holding the torch, with the waves and island formations below.
