1910 E98 “Set of 30” – Eddie Collins (Red Background)
SGC 7 – Black Swamp Find
Hall of Fame • Philadelphia Athletics • High-Grade Example
This is a superb SGC 7 example of Hall of Famer Eddie Collins from the 1910 E98 “Set of 30” issue. The card originates from the historic Black Swamp Find, the most important caramel-era discovery in hobby history and the source of nearly all top-grade E98 specimens known today. Collins is one of the key Hall of Famers in the set, and high-grade examples with this level of color and gloss rarely appear.
Eddie Collins (HOF 1939) starred for the Philadelphia Athletics, forming the backbone of Connie Mack’s early-1910s dynasty. A brilliant contact hitter and field leader, Collins finished with 3,315 hits, a .333 lifetime average, 4 World Series championships, and 19 seasons with 150+ hits. Widely regarded as one of the greatest second basemen in baseball history, Collins remains a cornerstone figure of the Deadball Era.
The 1910 E98 issue is one of the most recognizable early candy-era sets. Cards feature:
Crisp lithographed portraits
Bold solid-color backgrounds (red, green, orange, blue)
Clean early-1910s cardboard stock
A printed reverse checklist listing all 30 subjects
The checklist back includes several premier Hall of Famers such as Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, Nap Lajoie, Connie Mack, and Eddie Collins. The E98 checklist is one of the defining traits separating this issue from other anonymous candy cards of the era. The set became legendary following the Black Swamp Find, which revealed an unprecedented group of near-mint and mint E98s surviving in remarkable condition.
Clean and bright vintage example with outstanding color and gloss. Corners show the crispness expected of an SGC 7. Centering is balanced, and the checklist back is clean and fully legible.
