Comments from our expert and biography: Artist and interior decorator graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Toulouse and the School of Decorative Arts in Paris, janine janet nicknamed by Jean Cocteau "The Princess of Shellfish" is first attracted by drawing and sculpture. In 1936, she met the portrait painter Jean-Claude Janet. In 1952, Cristobal Balenciaga enabled him to fully express his talent and assert his style by creating the decorations of the windows of his fashion house installed avenue Georges V in Paris. All creation then begins with a drawing very often watercolored or gouache. The artist indeed needs to project his emotions and his baroque and phantasmagorical imagination on a sheet of paper. Janie Janet belongs to an artistic current which will, in reaction with the purity of the art Deco, favor the ornamental profusion. Influenced by the surrealists who appreciate the strange and the irrational, it is enjoying itself in the marvelous of her apartment-workshop on the rue des Petits Hotels which resembles the Cabinet of Curiosities of André Breton. The preparatory drawings for his creations discovered by the gallery are all the more precious and rare as they are often the witnesses of the ephemeral creations of the artist. For their achievement, the artist draws from his iconographic repertoire, the idyllic nature of his childhood in Reunion and gives each elements a clean life. No wonder of finding in his creations: shells, mother -of -pearl, madrepores, plants, bark or stones which she subjects to strange metamorphoses. Indeed, the artist in a singular way, mixes in his works the kingdoms (plant, animal, mineral and human) thus raises the question of our close link with nature. Is it the human who turns into a stone, a vegetable or is it the opposite? Aren't man and nature both sides of the same room? janine janet Then enchants the public with his creatures (sphinges, naiads, fauna, nymphs ...) and offers a magical universe which constitutes a real oxygen puff in these 1950s and 60s. An exhibition entitled " janine janet . Metamorphoses "will be devoted to him in 2003.
