Shawls such as these were exceedingly popular from the 1840s into the 1870s.  They were woven most predominately in Paisley, Scotland with some also being made in Edinburgh, Glasgow, France and Norwich. I would date this shawl to the 1870s as it is square and smaller noting that it didn't have to fit around the enormous bell shaped skirts of the 1850s-1860s.  It is in wonderful condition for its age with only minor small holes dotted here and there, most likely from use and being folded and refolded over the decades.  You can see them in the photos.  This one is different from most paisley shawls from this era as it has a large black center with the smaller border of vibrant paisley weaving.  The fringe is also black.  It would be perfect for historical costuming reenactment, display or an addition to any textile collection! There is also a tag that has been sewn onto it, I am going to assume that it was the original owner's name tag!

Please see all photos for condition and any flaws.
