Large early Victorian 1/2 length oil on canvas portrait of a seated female in a black dress and white lace and muslin headdress. Beside her is a vase with white roses and forget-me-nots - white roses symbolised purity, innocence and virginity so it is either a portrait in remembrance of the sitter or perhaps she is mourning the loss of a child.

She has a interesting, pale face with an enigmatic expression, slightly spooky and atmospheric, which looks best hung in a dark place. The painting has hung in an old house in Ireland for generations and although unsigned is believed to be Irish School. It is in its original heavy gilt frame - a great interior decorators painting.

From the front, it has a rich varnish and looking at the back, there are many repairs to the canvas. The frame has a little damage (and may suffer more in the post) and is included free of charge.

Condition issues have been taken into account with asking price.
