Why Bertrand likes: The works of Etienne Gaudet remind me of my stays in the Loire Valley and in particular its landscapes and its castles. The nature lover that I am cannot remain insensitive to the faculty that the artist to reveal to us the hidden treasures of the most beautiful regions of France.
Expert's comment: The talent of Etienne Gaudet is to perceive with incredible vigor and intensity the mysteries of the landscapes to better reveal them. His favorite subjects are the Loire Valley, Brittany and the South of France. Where some pass indifferent, the artist lights a flame with his colors and makes us aware of the beauty of things. We will therefore not be surprised to know that before painting, he liked to listen to the legends, the stories and the words of the past of the inhabitants. As a love of nature and using the technique of watercolor which does not allow to repent, the artist seizes these ephemeral moments that only the eye of a great can detect.
Artist's biography: Etienne Gaudet is a painter and engraver born in Château Chinon in Nièvre and died in Blois in the Loir et Cher. He has painted since the age of 11, inspired by the landscapes of his Natal Morvan. In 1915, the artist was in Nevers and took his first painting lessons at the École des Beaux-Arts Municipal. He then perfected his talent advised by artists like Fernand Chalandre who introduces him to engraving, but also by André Deslignères, Georges Tardy, Pierre Péradon, Maurice Locquin whose masters are those of the school of Barbizon. Quickly it was the call of the Loire Valley which pushed him to go up the river and to paint all the aspects as well as the neighboring campaigns of Nivernais in Touraine. The artist will enjoy significant regional notoriety. The regional and sometimes Parisian press will repeatedly rent the talent of the artist who will illustrate many books with his wood engravings. But all are unanimous, there is in its watercolors a poetry worthy of the greatest masters of the school of Barbizon such as Gustave Courbet or Jean-François Millet.
