Sokolov Alexander Ivanovich (1918-1973)
Artist, painter and teacher. Honored Artist of the RSFSR, member of the Leningrad organization of the Union of Artists of the RSFSR. He studied with Veniamin Belkin, Mikhail Bernstein, Pavel Naumov, Andrey Mylnikov. In 1950, A. Sokolov graduated from the institute in the workshop of V. M. Oreshnikov with the title of artist of painting. After graduating from the institute, Sokolov was engaged in graduate school, and at the same time began teaching at the drawing department of the LIZHSA named after. I.E.Repina. Upon completion of graduate school, he defended his dissertation for the degree of candidate of art history. In 1960, A. Sokolov was awarded the title of associate professor, in 1972 - professor of LIZHSA named after. I.E.Repina. Since 1950, Alexander Sokolov has participated in exhibitions. In 1969–1973, Alexander Ivanovich headed the painting section of the Leningrad organization of the Union of Artists of the RSFSR. A. Sokolov's works are in art museums and private collections in Russia, the USA, Great Britain, France and other countries.
Alexander Ivanovich Sokolov has participated in various art exhibitions since 1950. He exhibited his works together with the works of the leading masters of fine art of Leningrad.
He tried his hand at various artistic genres, working in different techniques. He painted genre and thematic paintings, historical and revolutionary compositions, portraits, landscapes. He became most famous as the author of thematic paintings and numerous life studies, in which he created a memorable collective portrait of contemporaries - steelworkers, women and children of the post-war collective farm village.
