Originally serialized in France, 1842-1843. Introduces Prince Rodolphe, a crime-fighting, "quasi-detective" living in disguise among the Paris underworld. Bound in three-quarter red morocco over marbled paper-covered boards. 5 raised bands and gilt ruled and decorated spine compartments. Title and volume number in C2 and C3 respectively. Marbled end-papers and all edges. Illustrated title-pages and dozens of head-pieces and other in-text illustrations by Bernard. Square, tight and remarkably clean throughout with maybe a spot or to a couple of preliminaries but barely. Strong, uncracked hinges. Spine panels moderately toning. Mild rubbing to the front hinge of volume one. A hint at the tips but really quite well-preserved for 175 years old. A gorgeous collectable set.
