For sale is a pair of Florsheim 30761 Beaumont Brown and Gold Calfskin Leather Disco Platform Shoes Men's 8 D.
The 1970s were known for being a time of great upheaval in America, and in many ways, the clothing and footwear of the time were a signifier. For both men and women, clothing patterns tended to shirk longstanding norms of fit, function, and design. Many people today admire these avant-garde artifacts of the period, while others detest them intensely. And while the latter is largely tied to their polarizing designs, clothing from this period was among the first to face dramatic declines in quality.
Thanks to cost-cutting methods, offshoring and other manufacturing practices in many industries, man-made subpar artificial materials were used to build goods. Polyester fabric reigned supreme in textile goods, while in footwear, plastics and vinyl replaced many leather components in shoes. And anyone who's into shoes knows that faux leather or vinyl components are more uncomfortable, do not "breathe," age poorly, and do not stretch to accommodate the human foot the way genuine leather does. To this day, the fallout of these changes to the footwear industry is apparent, as any dress shoe you procure under $150 is likely cemented construction and has some, if not all, faux-leather components.
Not all brands' quality fell off a cliff, and this Florsheim shoe from 1973 is one prime example. Named the "Beaumont," this platform, cap-toe derby shoe was loud and appealed to the youth of the time, with its decidedly disco styling. And despite targeting those price-conscious consumers, Florsheim did not cut corners on this shoe; it features a quality construction (almost identical to the 1950s and 1960s Blue Label Florsheim shoes) with fine Calfskin uppers and genuine leather linings, sockliners, insoles, midsoles, outsoles, and - notably - full stacked heels. These are quality shoes with all the bells and whistles for the man who may be into current fashion trends, but refuses to compromise on quality.
You can now own this testament to Florsheim's quality, from a time when committing to build shoes this way was increasingly uncommon.
These shoes feature an eye-catching two-tone brown and gold calfskin leather upper, classic 1970s platform Disco shoes design, flat braided brown laces, leather and fabric (for ventilation) lining, leather sockliner, leather insole, thick leather midsole and outsole, tall stacke. leather heel, and Goodyear Welted Construction.
For reference, here are the approximate measurements (taken along the outsole):
Length - 10.625"
Width (at the ball of foot) - 3.75"
These shoes have seen some wear but have been maintained well. I first rehydrated these shoes with multiple rounds of Weimans Leather Conditioner (spray), cleaned and conditioned them, inside and out, with Weimans Leather Wipes and Weimans Leather Conditioner, deep cleaned and conditioned with Lexol Cleaner and Conditioner, edge-dressed/polished the sole-sidewall/edge with Saphir Beaute du Cuir Shoe Cream, and polished them with Saphir Beaute du Cuir Shoe Cream.
