Charles Griffin (b. 1946) – British Cartoonist and Caricaturist

Biography:
Born in 1946 in Ruislip, Middlesex, England, Charles Griffin attended Berkhamsted School and briefly studied at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, where he published caricatures in Wishstream (1965–1968). After leaving Sandhurst, he trained at Harrow School of Art and Bath Academy of Art (1971–1973), focusing on graphics. Griffin freelanced for Punch, Daily Mail, Daily Mirror, The Observer, and The Times, joining the Sunday People as a political cartoonist in 1983 and later working for the Daily Mirror and Daily Express. In 2000, he was named “Caricaturist of the Year” by the Cartoon Art Trust.

Artistic Style and Legacy:
Griffin’s pen, ink, and wash cartoons are known for sharp satire and detailed linework, targeting political figures and celebrities like Margaret Thatcher and the Prince and Princess of Wales. Influenced by Carl Giles and David Levine, his work, such as Barry meets Edna (sold for $5,525 at Christie’s), remains a notable part of British cartooning.'
