A major part of the 'land' war in Vietnam was actually fought out amongst the labyrinth of rivers, canals and minor waterways making up the Mekong Delta. In this hostile environment against an elusive, highly motivated and dangerous enemy, the South Vietnamese, increasingly dominated by their American allies, deployed a bewildering variety of naval and military equipment to counter Viet Cong ingenuity. In addition, the coastal waters were patrolled by Allied naval vessels ranging from motor torpedo boats to cruisers and even a battleship to prevent supplies reaching the VC guerrillas from North Vietnam.
