Curly Wurly, the iconic bar of chocolate-coated soft caramel, was launched in the Tyne Tees area of the UK in late 1970 and then across other TV regions until it went national in September 1972. It was relaunched towards the end of 1974 with an improved recipe, making the caramel softer to chew. But how was this bizarre bar conceived? Early development documents show that the product was developed during group discussions with children, which explains the bar’s rather fun character.
