DESCRIPTION:
Extremely rare ceramic miniature depicting a wonderful portrait of a girl with long pigtails, from the 1950/1960s, by the famous Greek artist Panos Valsamakis, one of the most important ceramist, of the 20th century, signed with his initials, (separately the letter "Π" at the bottom left and the letter "Β" at the bottom right. This miniature comes from the artist's most interesting series of works "Refugees" with the immense sadness in the large expressive eyes and the direct reference to the lost homeland. (Valsamakis was a refugee). One tiny chip in the upper left corner and one in the upper right corner of no significance, generally in very good condition. Total size (without the one-centimeter wooden frame),10 X 10 cm (4 X 4 in) and weight 240 gr. From a smoke/pet free home. We do our best to describe everything thoroughly and accurately. Panos Valsamakis: Ceramicist, painter (Kydonies Asia Minor,1900-Athens1986). Studied painting in the period 1923-1930 in the Ecole des Arts in Marseilles and ceramics at the School of Saint-Jean du Desert. During the years 1930-1942 directs the artistic workshop "S.A Kerameikos", while from 1942 to 1957 he is the artistic director of the workshop "Pottery, AKEL" who had founded the National Bank. After 1957 working at his private laboratory Marousi, Athens. He presented his work at numerous exhibitions in Greece and abroad ( Silver Medal in Esposition Internationale, Paris 1937 ). In 1982 he became a retrospective exhibition of his work at the National Gallery. Has illustrated books, he has published books, articles and essays in newspapers and magazines in Greece and abroad. His works are in the National Gallery, in the Gallery Katsigras, Vorres Museum, Contemporary Art, Teloglion Foundation, etc and adorning facades and interior both public and private buildings. Is listed in "Directory of Greek Artists" 16th - 20th century, Melissa edition, 1999, volume 1, pages 133-134.
