Antique Fribourg & Treyer Pipe. Hand-Painted Porcelain w/ Brass Lid and Hinge.

The bowl is 3.5" tall, plus 1.5" for an extended nozzle that inserts into a standard long-pipe stem.

F&T trademark stamped into rim. (See second photo.)

Hunter scene, hand-painted by German artisan.

Though sold in F&T's UK shop, the theme of the scene strongly suggests it was commissioned from a quality maker -- and hand-painted, most likely in Dresden, Germany. (See notes below.*)

In excellent condition.  No cracks in porcelain and no significant paint fading or losses.  Hinge and lid are strong.

This artistic piece would make for a fine decorative display for a man's den -- or used to light up and enjoy a favorite tobacco blend.

Provenance: From estate of a collector. In the same family since before WWII. This piece is likely much older, as this style was being made in Germany in the late 19th century.

Note: this is one of two porcelain pipes from the same estate that are listed in my shop. The other one is priced significantly lower, as it does not bear maker's marks and shows oxidation to hinge. If you would like to buy both, send a message and I'll arrange a nice discount and combined shipping.

*FRIBOURG & TREYER was a gentlemen's pipe shop established in the London, UK Haymarket District in 1720. They would go on to cater to the rich and famous for over 250 years, and held the designations of Royal appointments to both the King of England and the King of Belgium. Their pipes were commissioned to be made by various pipe craftsmen in England, and from the continent, mostly Germany. Because of the quality of their clientele, F&T would demand and sell only the highest quality pipes.  While they have been closed for many years, their vintage pipes continue to command the respect of pipe smokers and collectors around the globe.
