Description

Al Gionfriddo (b. 1922 - d. 2003) hand signed and inscribed "1947 World Series", "I made 'The catch' to rob Joe DiMaggio and save the game for the Dodgers: on this Rawlings official National League baseball. Gionfriddo was a Major League Baseball outfielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Brooklyn Dodgers. Giofriddo was acquired by the Dodgers from the Pirates mid-way through the 1947 season and is most famous for his heroic catch of a drive off the bat of the Yankees' Joe DiMaggio in Game 6 of the 1947 World Series. The Dodgers led the Yankees 805 going into the bottom of the 6th inning when Gionfriddo was brought in as a defensive replacement. Two were on base when DiMaggio drove the ball to the outfield. Gionfriddo raced across the field and caught the ball several steps before crashing into the bullpen gate. In one of the most famous images in baseball history, DiMaggio shook his head and kicked at the dirt in frustration. The signature includes authentication from PSA/DNA.
