ITEM DESCRIPTION:

Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous Vintage Mid Century c1961 Large Version Collotype Lithograph in an Original 1920s Period NOS Bronzed Gessoed Frame Moulding Depicting The Famous Neoclassical & Romanticized Scene of Two Girls Enjoying a Respite Under the Cool Tree-covered Colonnade in the Morning on a Azure Blue Lake with Mountains and Rocky Outcrops Bathed in Golden Sunrays, titled, “Daybreak” (AKA “Day Break”), after the original 1922 oil on panel painting by the world-famous listed painter, ‘Maxfield Parrish’ (American, 1870-1966), whose printed signature appears lower-middle-right in the image area (near edge).

Publisher & Print Info: Aside from this Litho being a beautiful Collotype reproduction, we also had framed it from ‘New/Old Stock’ in the 2”-wide gorgeous ‘period’ antique gessoed & painted frame moulding (similar to the vintage 1920s Regal Art gessoed plaques) we had in our vast inventory that was used on many of Parrish’s prints, and features the dark antique bronzed metallic finish with matte royal blue hand-painted accents. The Litho was published by the New York Graphic Society and the Litho’s outer margins were trimmed off back-in-the-day and it was drymounted to the stiff cardboard backing stock when it was framed, and the publisher’s info box was cutoff and attached to the back of the piece, which features the publisher’s hourglass-shaped Trademark logo (two triangles stacked at tips, top black, bottom grey) with the artist’s name & only birthdate (published before his death), the title and collection info which reads, ‘Maxfield Parrish, (American, 1870- ), DAYBREAK, Private Collection’. NYGS published several sizes of Parrish’s “Daybreak” over the years and our vintage ‘large-sized’ print was published before the later 1973 New York Graphic Society/Watson-Guptill Publications ‘smaller-sized’ version and the subsequent 1974 ‘medium-sized version’ repro too—since the artist died in 1966 and his death date was left blank on our piece indicating a publication date prior to the artist’s death.. Our Litho shows up in the earlier 1961 NYGS catalog and the inventory number for our piece from the old NYGS catalogs was, ‘7977’ for the large piece (Other NYGS Nos.: 5977 for the medium size 10-1/2” x 18”, and 3949 for the small size 6” x 10”) and the large one initially sold for $12- (which equals about $126- in today’s dollar for 2025)—certainly not cheap...and the medium-sized one sold for $6- and the small-sized one sold for $1- respectively.

About the Painting: Parrish’s early concept sketch for “Daybreak” was to feature three young women (third near right column), but he omitted her from the final painting for fear of overcrowding the scene. The reclining girl was modeled by Kitty Owen, the granddaughter of the well-known American lawyer, orator & politician, William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925), and she was also painted by Parrish in his other works to include, “Morning”, “The Canyon” and also “Wild Geese”, and the standing figure is Jean Parrish, the artist’s young daughter—the omitted young female model was Susan Lewin.

The original publisher was Reinthal & Newman distributed through their House of Art and the printer for the first print in 1923 was to be Forbes Lithograph Company, Boston, MA to attain the best possible color reproduction, but after them stating they couldn’t print it for six months, the job fell to Brett Lithographing Company in Long Island City, NY. Brett sent Parrish proofs of the medium-sized print in April, 1923 of which he was pleased by, though he had a few suggestions to correct various aspects within the image like relative color values, highlights and other small changes to color schemes within specific areas of the image. Parrish then visited New York in July of that year to review the larger 18” x 30” reproductions to make sure they met his expectations. The prints originally sold for $10- framed and $6- unframed ($183- & $110- in today’s dollar for 2025 respectively). After publication, the popularity of “Daybreak” was far beyond what Parrish or the House of Art could have anticipated, and by the end of 1923, Parrish’s royalties from sales of the print were almost $25,000 (which equals $458,000 in today’s dollar for 2025), and as demand grew over the next two years, his royalties for 1925 were more than $75,000 (equals $1,344,000 in today’s dollar for 2025)—WOW!!! Scott and Fowles, Parrish’s New York gallery, exhibited “Daybreak” in November-December of 1925 with 49 other works by Parrish, and 28 sold, including “Daybreak” and “Romance” which commanded the highest prices of $10,000 each ($179,000 in today’s dollar). It later sold on May 25, 2006, to a private collector (Mel Gibson's then-wife, Robyn) at auction at Christie’s for $7.6 million which set a record price for a Parrish painting. It was sold again on May 21, 2010, for $5.2 million.

Parrish considered “Daybreak” to be his “great painting”, the epitome of his work and needless to say, is one of Parrish’s best-known works which went on to become one of the most-popular and best-selling prints of all time—one for every four American homes, and according to the National Museum of American Illustration, it outsold Andy Warhol’s Campbell's Soup Cans and Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, and is still in print today. (Various excerpts & historical info of the painting’s history from: Maxfield Parrish, by Coy L. Ludwig, Watson-Guptill Publications, New York, 1973; Wikipedia)

Size & Condition: The size of our trimmed & mounted Litho is 18” x 29-7/8”. The Litho is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its vintage age with no discernable color fade—rich, vivid fresh color & tones! This Collotype has been tucked away in our attic and hasn’t seen the light of day in basically all this time and is as ‘mint’ as any collector could hope to find in its original condition and especially in the vintage 1920s period frame moulding—what a beauty and will make the perfect addition to any Maxfield Parrish or art collection! Aside from the Litho being drymounted down to the backing board, there is no real or noticeable damage at all on this lovely piece. No tears, no foxing, no creasing, no staining etc. The original antique/period frame moulding has a little minor bronze paint flaking here & there, mostly on the left & right sides of the outer moulding rounded edges, and a handful of small nicks here & there too, but aren’t that noticeable and certainly don’t detract from the antique frame at all and could easily be touched up, but thankfully this beautiful period frame is still with the piece and presents beautifully... Negligible/no real or noticeable toning of the stock from age. What a beauty, so don’t miss this rare opportunity!!! Due to being framed, this will be safely hardpacked & shipped.

EMAILING US: eBayers, at all costs, please use eBay's email system only (no outside email addresses) with any questions you may have. eBay's email system GUARANTEES we get your email and more importantly, that you get ours. A lot of servers in the last few years have started using newer SPAM filters, and there have been a lot of problems with GOOD emails not getting through correctly, and being returned as undeliverable. We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it.

COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early. It would not be fair to the rest of the eBay Worldwide community if we did that. THE HIGHEST BIDDER -OR- HIGHEST OFFER WINS IT!!!!!

Thank you from the Staff at Meibohm Fine Arts, GOOD LUCK & HAPPY BIDDING!!!
