A vintage watercolor painting sketch with actual sample fabric examples attached.It is very rare to receive not only a fashion sketch to a play by the designer but fabric examples as well.The sketch is of a famous play.There is minor wear with age overall this piece is in good condition.Please refer to all photos as they are all current.This is a personalized piece drawn for friends of the artist Carolyn & Phillip.Lower left It states "Dear friends to you a merry christmas".To the upper right states "Designed by William French May 1963" amazing indeed.Lower right side in pencil "leporello"
Painting Size H- 15 1/2" x W- 11 1/2" (Framed) William French was a well known costume designer in the late 1960’s - 1970’s who traveled the world doing fashion shows for charity events.He was known as the 'Kingmaker of the charity fashion galla'.He started as an American costume designer for theaters but moved to London where he started to do elaborate fashion shows which he became well known for.He soon traveled throughout all of Europe and Asia doing his fashion shows for the royalty of each country he visited.He also made costumes for TV in Hollywood and off Broadway productions.
This is a Fashion Sketch, it has Gouache, watercolor, pencil highlights and pinned fabric officially making it a collage.It is signed, dated & personalized to friends all high end attributes.The paper is very lightly yellowed from age and has a few small spots that may even be watercolor splash.The frame has a few small scratches all minor, overall looks good for its age.The verso has hardboard backing and is hang ready.The paper it was painted on has an embossed stamp in the lower right that says, 'Canson'........
