The Dholak is one of the most widely used percussion instruments in Indian folk music and has also earned a permanent place in recording studios and broadcast environments. Its applications range across various musical forms, including dance music such as Bhangra and Garba, as well as devotional Bhajans and Keertans.
The dholak is a double-headed drum, featuring a bass head on one side and a treble head on the other.
The left-hand bass side uses a single membrane with a special internal application made from a mixture of tar, clay, and sand (commonly known as dholak masala). This application lowers the pitch and produces a well-defined, rich tone.
The treble side does not include any putty, allowing for clear and sharp sound articulation.
