Chicago, IL- Fernow & Koenig 25¢ ___ 1862 Remainder PMG Very Fine 25.
The firm of Fernow & Koenig was in the dry goods business at 22 North Clark Street circa 1861 to 1866 when the company, under that name, is last mentioned in Chicago city directories. The principals were Louis Fernow and Joseph A. Koening (ca. 1861-64) / August J. Koening (1865-66). The note features an apparent custom vignette of the business block in which the firm was located (destroyed during the Great Chicago Fire in 1871), flanked by a young woman's portrait at left and a vignette of a man on horseback driving a herd of mixed livestock at right.
True Chicago Civil War era scrip is far rarer than one might think! This is the only civil war scrip from Chicago I have come across. Sure to be a highly sought after piece for years to come.
