This sale is for one rare

 PHOTOGRAPH

called

"A CLASS of MEDICAL DOCTORS-Hitchcock of Afton"

(hand written in pencil across the very bottom edge of the mounting board and not visible in the scan).

I am assuming this to be in AFTON, OKLAHOMA on circa 1890

(the date is up to you.. but is very old, maybe even 1880's, who knows).

Approximate size of the entire photo on mount board is  11" X 14".

 By itself, the photograph measures

9 1/2" X 7 1/4" in size.

The scanned image is a bit cropped.  I didn’t get the whole image on the scanner.

Names listed right below the bottom edge of the photograph are:

Schuck    Barlow    Boaz or Boas ?

Hitchcock    Barclay   Kolb

Baker    Pirtle    Dr. Dugan

Steward   Pelle   Airth   & Townsend

I'm not certain this image is from Afton, Oklahoma or not so IT IS UP TO YOU!  Here's some things about my research:  Google any of the last names with Afton, Oklahoma...   For example.....  "Pirtle Afton Oklahoma" and it comes up.  Also, Google the name of the person with just the name and state of Oklahoma:  Example:  Airth Oklahoma.   Afton probably isn't a very big place and the name Pirtle is not really a common name.   Additionally, I noticed that enough of these men are wearing pointed cowboy boots and round toed cowboy boots to indicate the strong possibility of this being taken in a Western state or in a Midwestern State....  Additionally, Doctors were a bit more uppity hence the derbies and one hat that appears somewhat Western.    There are 13 men in this picture.  Often, in genealogy,  if there is the name of a city and last name of a person or persons... they may have many descendants in the specific city or many descendants in the specific state.  The key, for me was to Google the names that are a bit different and not so common.  In the case of this image, with Afton Oklahoma in the Google... the odd names kept popping up in the State of Oklahoma and some of them came up specifically in Afton Oklahoma.   Descendants may be the key.    I think a few of the names in the photo actually came up with Afton Oklahoma.  I am not certain if this is Afton, Oklahoma or not, but based on my work, I would tend to favor Afton, OK.

ACQUIRED INFORMATION FROM AN EMAIL THAT WAS SENT TO ME:

Hello, I came across this photo and became interested on the possible backstory. Being from the area around Afton, Ok. and interested in history and genealogy, I was fairly sure there had never been a medical school in Ottawa County, much less Afton. So I looked at it from the angle that the photo was specifically saying that Hitchcock was from Afton. From Ancestry.com, Findagrave dot com and Newspapers dot com I think have found the Hitchcock that is mentioned in the photo. Dr. Ireneus Duncan Hitchcock. 1864-1930. He has a Findagrave memorial and is buried at Vinita, Craig, Ok. Found an obituary that in part reads; "Dr. Hitchcock Dies in Afton.......a resident of Afton since 1898.....he went to Vinita as a young man and later studied dentistry, pharmacy, and medicine, graduating from a Louisville medical college in 1889.....married and moved to Afton in 1898". From Wikipedia; "The University of Louisville School of Medicine at the University of Louisville is a medical school located in Louisville, Kentucky, United States. Opened as the Louisville Medical Institute in 1837, it is one of the oldest medical schools in North America and the 9th oldest in the United States. Hope you find this helpful, I enjoy the hunt.
