The
Greentails
Jasta 5, Autumn 1917
by Simon Smith
From their grass runway at
Boistrancourt in northern France, Commanding Officer Richard Flashar leads
Albatros DVa fighters of Jasta 5 on a patrol to support the German 2nd Army,
Autumn 1917.
One of the crack German
squadrons on the Western Front, Jasta 5 included a number of Aces; Fritz Rumey follows his
Commanding Officer in a green checked Albatros with Otto Könnecke flying in a green
one, both holders of Prussia's highest award for valour, the Pour Le Merit. The
aircraft with the blue/white diamonds is that of Lt Wolf and the Albatros with a
white edelweiss is another famous Ace and PLM holder, Paul Baumer. The aircraft
of Dilcher follows the others. Each pilot had his surname initial painted on
the underside of the lower wing.
This stunning painting brings
to life the vibrant colours of this famous Luftstreikräfte unit as they prepare
for aerial conflict during one of the bleakest periods in world history.
Printed on heavy paper with
superior 12 colour giclee process for lifetime colour fastness, this is a print
of the highest quality.
