HISTORY
The doctors' costume originated in the 17th Century and consisted of an ankle length overcoat and a bird-like beak mask often filled with sweet or strong smelling substances.   The beak could hold dried flowers, herbs (commonly lavender), spices, camphor and sometimes a vinegar sponge.    The purpose of the mask was to avoid bad smells which were thought to be the principal cause of disease and infection.   The doctors' believed the herbs would counter the 'evil' smells of the plague and prevent them from becoming infected.
They would also use a long wooden cane to point out areas needing attention and to examine patients without having to touch them!

*Decoupage is the art of decorating an object by glueing paper 'cut-outs' onto a surface combining special paint effects with gold leaf.   Each layer is sealed with varnish, often multiple coats, until the 'stuck on' appearance disappears and the result looks like a painting or inlay work.

Artisans in Italy have produced decorative objects using decoupage techniques since the 18th century.
