This is a beautiful antique Rosskopf & Gerz (R&G) 0.5L German beer stein, produced in Höhr-Grenzhausen around 1895–1914, featuring the classic raised-relief “Lovers” motif. This example is Mold 302, one of the most desirable romantic designs from the late 19th–early 20th century Westerwald potteries.
⭐ Rare Two-Poem Variant
Most Mold 302 steins display one poetic verse panel.
This stein features the full two-panel poetic couplet, making it the more decorative and less common variant:
Panel 1:
“Ich seh in deinen Äuglein klar”
(“I see clearly in your little eyes.”)
Panel 2:
“Du bleibst mir treu auf immerdar.”
(“You will remain faithful to me forevermore.”)
Two separate poem panels flanking the central scene elevate this version above standard catalog form and make it more desirable to collectors.
⭐ Artwork & Design
The front scene depicts a courting couple embracing on a stone terrace, with a cherubic child at their feet holding flowers. The sculptural relief is deep and expressive, and the full-color glaze is vibrant and well preserved. This palette—sage green, cobalt, ochre, ivory, and burgundy—is characteristic of high-quality R&G production.
Decorative borders include trellis panels, scrolling rococo elements, and raised florals, all crisply molded.
⭐ Original Pewter Lid
The stein retains its original embossed pewter lid, featuring:
• Multi-tiered domed structure
• Deeply engraved scrollwork and florals
• Finely cast Rococo openwork thumb lift
Note: The two tiny holes on the pewter dome are original casting vent holes, typical of late-19th-century German pewter foundry work. They are not damage or repairs.
⭐ Maker Marks
The underside is impressed with:
• GERMANY export mark (post-1891)
• 302 mold number
• Additional factory decorator marks
These marks are consistent and authentic for Rosskopf & Gerz production from the Wilhelmine era.
⭐ Measurements
• Height: approx. 11” (including lid)
• Width: approx. 5.5” including handle
• Capacity: 0.5 Liter (stamped)
⭐ Condition
Very good antique condition. No cracks or repairs. Relief details remain sharp, colors strong, and the glaze intact with only minor age-appropriate wear. Pewter lid has a natural patina and works smoothly.
