The Pungi is traditionally crafted from a dried bottle gourd, with the neck often carved for decorative and aesthetic appeal.
On the opposite end of the gourd, two (sometimes one or three) reed or bamboo pipes are attached. These pipes are known as the Jivala:
One pipe contains 5–9 finger holes and is used to play the melody
The second pipe produces a continuous drone sound
The Jivala is securely fitted to the gourd using beeswax, which also allows for pitch adjustment when required.
