⩥About this Mala
"Japa" refers to the meditative repetition of a mantra or the name of a deity. In Sanskrit, "Japa" literally means "muttering" or "mumbling", but in spiritual practice, we use it to talk about a sacred sound, word, or phrase as a form of meditation.

"Mala" refers to the garland of prayer beads used to count mantra repetitions - hence "Japa Mala" - freeing the mind from the counting to focus on the mantra itself. "Mala" means garland in Sanskrit. Most mala's are 108 beads, but shorter ones can be useful in groups of nine. Mala's are convenient but are not necessary for meditation practice.

Tulsi malas are made from the wood of the Tulsi plant (Holy Basil), a plant associated with Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi, goddess of wealth, happiness, and good fortune.
