Large format book
14.5 x 11 inches published in 1973 This by Alice M. Coats:
“This book is limited
to flowers as represented on paper or vellum, not those in painting or in the
innumerable applied arts. It covers the period from 1485 to 1850, plates are
taken from unpublished originals; nearly all are from printed books, none of
them easily available and some exceedingly rare – in one case, only three
copies are known to exist. So far as
possible, I have avoided examples that can be found in modern colour facsimiles;
at least ninety per cent of the subjects have never, so far as I know, be reproduced
before. The word “flowers” has been rather widely interpreted; a few trees, fruits,
roots and vegetables have been included where it seemed justified by the
quality of the design or the interest of the subject.”
Book has 208
pages. There is foxing around the edges
of the pages or at least browning. The DJ does show weal especially on the
spine edge bottom. Published by McGraw
Hill Book Company.
