As decribed by a friend:
Qing, Kangxi (1662-1722), Dehua white-glazed porcelain statue, showing two Europeans, a large lion and two young lions.
In 18th century, the East India merchant ship arrived in England from Xiamen, China. The cargo records on the ship can be compared with such artifacts, which are called "Man riding a lion". The Maritime Silk Road is an important channel for overseas countries to enter China.
In the 17th year of Kangxi's reign (1678), the Portuguese envoy Benedict presented two African lions as tribute to the Qing Dynasty. Kangxi was so happy that he asked the "翰林院 Hanlin Academy" to write poems to entertain for fun.
Herein extracted a good line of the poem:
重译梯航神兽通, Re-run of the Maritime Silk Road and the mythological animal arrival.
遐荒殊域喜来同. bringing joyful from the remote region".

Provenance: From the collection of Phillip Allen (1938-2022)

Phillip Allen was a much-loved orientalist, he was a council member of the Oriental Ceramic Society, scholarly, generous and fun. Phillip organised an OCS viewing of the Sir Victor Sassoon Chinese ivories collection, which he both catalogued and was instrumental in organising their bequest to the British Museum.
