Description

A very nicely decorated and highly unusual bowl. Chinese porcelain, top quality painting

Wanli / Tianqi period, ca 1610-1630,
The scene possibly shows a scene of the novel the "Water MArgin" in which makes it a political cartoon on porcelain The bowl illustrates a scene from the Water Margin (Shuihu zhuan), a fourteenth-century novel. The scene on one side depicts Wang Qing, a leader of the out- laws and a student of the martial arts, being ferried across a river by fishermen to avoid arrest by Song officials. The profile of his figure is faintly visible through the canopy of the small boat. On the opposite side of the brushpot, a group of drunken fishermen is pictured in boats, and the figure of Wang Qing is included at the other side of the water.
