Political mailer ahead of the 2004 Iowa Caucuses for former three-term Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, headlined “Only Dean Opposed the War from the Start,” claiming that rivals Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts and Rep. Richard Gephardt of Missouri “voted ‘yes’ and gave George Bush unchecked power to invade Iraq and failed to ask the tough questions.”

Through much of 2003, Dean lead Democrats in fundraising and continued to battle Gephardt as the front-runner for the nomination. But surges by Kerry an Sen. John Edwards along with negative campaigning between Dean and Gephardt led to a victory in Iowa by Kerry, followed by Edwards, and Dean finished ahead of Gephardt.

The night ended with the “Dean Scream” or “I Have a Scream” speech in which poor audio and a hoarse voice made Dean’s speech to supporters sound unhinged, dampening support for his campaign.
