This is an original Photogravure / gravure circa 1900 of General John Pershing. Photogravure ; plate 5.75" x 7.75" (20.3 x 15 cm), sheet 8" x 10.5" (26.6 x 20.8 cm)
Head & Shoulders Portrait of U.S. General John J. Pershing” (AKA John Joseph “Black Jack” Pershing, 1860-1948), after the original engraving Jules Maurice Gaspard (French-born American, 1862-1919), whose printed signature appears lower right in the image area. Includes Pershing's facsimile signature. This original photogravure was printed by "Studios" for Graphic Art, New York, N.Y., under copyright by Andersen-Lamb, N.Y., as part of a limited series of notable figures, only two of which are known to have survived. The other surviving photogravure in this series is titled "Theodore Roosevelt / gravure Andersen-Lamb, N.Y." and forms part of the Marian S. Carson collection at the Library of Congress.
General John Pershing. A West Point graduate, Pershing fought with distinction in the Spanish American War and in the Philippians and rose steadily through the ranks. A strategist of remarkable talent, he took command of all US forces on the Western Front in WWI. Pershing became the only person during his natural lifetime to be given the rank General of the Armies, the highest rank achievable. In 1976, Congress granted the same title posthumously to George Washington, the only other American to have held that rank.
In 1917, Anderson-Lamb printed a series of steel etchings of the John Pershing piece. These etchings are distinguished from this original by its smaller facsimile signature and the missing credit to the photogravure studio, "Studios" for Graphic Art, New York, N.Y. Additionally, the etching reproductions often have small holes near the top margin used for registration to keep paper properly aligned in an automated printing process. These holes are not present on an original photogravure.
