Swiss Warbler Bird Calls
Wholesale Lot ~ Classic 1950's
Ideal item for Dealers ~ Antique Malls ~ Flea Markets
Sometimes referred to as The Wonderful Double Throat. It
is a small leather like material and metal Half-moon shaped device with a
cellophane reed strip mounted in it. You soak it in water, place in your mouth,
and hiss air across it with your tongue to make sounds like birds and wild
animals. You can make a wide variety of different wild animal
sounds. These are the original ones made in Taiwan in the 1950's & 60's. It comes in a small, unsealed envelope that has detailed
instructions for use. It says, … “Any person following these
directions we will guarantee they can imitate any bird or animal in a few
minutes.” This was a popular mail order contraption that was
widely advertised in Comic books, sports magazines, etc. in the 1950's.
Unused and very old . . . from the 1950's.
We were fortunate enough to trip across a case of these in an old Brooklyn, NY warehouse over 25 years ago. We bought all they had when we cleaned out the warehouse. They were the importer that sourced several companies that sold novelties in comic book ads. Johnson - Smith, Detroit, a major novelty dealer, also sold them. I bought one in a comic book ad in 1959 and could never get it to work.
There is a 3 minute YouTube Video at https://youtu.be/uZK2ATMG5O8 that shows a guy getting one to work. After watching the video, I tried one and could make all sorts of strange tweets and chirps and whistles. I don't know if it would attract a Swiss Warbler, but they are real! They do work. It may take several hours of practicing it, to master it. Check out this guy on YouTube https://youtu.be/HDO2P817LSk or do a You Tube search for dozens of demos of how to make it work. Age and warehouse patina is evident. Workmanship typical of post war Taiwan. I looked over a few dozen and found one with a loose reed. The rest were good.
Anyhow, we are cleaning out the warehouse. These are in a dry, climate controlled, shelved warehouse. We need the space for other boxes of unused, old merchandise we want to open. Our collectable product items generally sell for $10.00 to $100.00 and these just don't fit in. It was part of a warehouse deal, we had to buy it all. They are genuine antiques that you can sell for a buck! Look them up on eBay. They go for over $10.00 each!
