The 1972 Treaty of Accession is the agreement between the European Communities and Ireland, Norway, Denmark and the United Kingdom. These four countries all wanted to join the European Union. The treaty entered into force on 1st January, 1973, making all countries members of the European Union. To honour Ireland's 50th anniversary of being a member of the European Union, a special 2 Euro coin has been issued in 2023. On the face of this special Irish 2 Euro coin 'eu50' is shown. The country name EIRE (Ireland) and the years 1973 and 2023 are also displayed.
