William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918) was an English author who was born in Blackmore near Braintree in Essex. He was well known for his horror, supernatural, and science fiction. One of his recurring characters, Thomas Carnacki, is featured in several of his most famous stories and was inspired by Algernon Blackwood's occult detective John Silence. His work is said to have had an influence on H.P. Lovecraft, even though Lovecraft did not read his works until 1934. Lovecraft described The Night Land as  "one of the most potent pieces of macabre imagination ever written".
