A House of Pomegranates by Oscar Wilde, Brentano's / Methuen, Circa 1915
Illustrated by Jesse M. King, With 16 Tipped-In Color Plates
Printed by Morrison & Gibb, Ltd., Edinburgh
162 Pages, Measures Approx. 10 1/8" x 7 3/4"
This book comes from the estate of a
descendant of the Brentano family, specifically Simon Brentano, who
served as president of the famous book company until his death in 1915. It is my understanding that the American edition has red covers and the British edition has blue. The book offered here has dark green covers with gilt gold decorations, with "Brentano's...New York" across the very bottom front cover and at the bottom of the spine, which differs from the normal red-covered Brentano's / American edition.
The covers are slightly curved in a concave fashion, more so for the front. The exterior of the covers are in good shape with a little light wear, and the gold gilt is mostly intact, though there is a small split at the top of the spine on the verso. There are areas of light foxing / toning scattered throughout the text, though nothing severe. There are small edge tears (less than a cm or so) along the upper-left of illustrations 8, 9 & 13. The book is free of writing / markings. Please see photographs for details.
